Dry Needling

Chronic pain, muscle tightness, taut bands and nodules, and acute and chronic pain shouldn’t be considered a normal part of your life. PMP Pain Center offers dry needling to relieve these symptoms and help you live your best life.

Targeting Myofascial Trigger Points to Promote Natural Healing with Dry Needling

Trigger points are tight, knotted areas that can cause pain and restrict movement. Dry needling, also called intramuscular manual therapy, stimulates the body’s natural healing properties by releasing these knotted muscle fibers and reducing inflammation. This process made this technique an excellent physical therapy modality that addresses various conditions.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique used to relieve muscle pain and tension. It involves inserting very thin, solid needles into specific areas of the muscle called trigger points. Unlike acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine, this technique focuses on treating musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction.

At PMP Pain Center, our licensed physical therapists use this technique to help you feel better and move more freely. It’s a safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment that can release tension in the muscles, improve blood flow, and stimulate the body’s natural healing process.

Common Conditions Treated with Dry Needling

Dry needling is often confused with acupuncture, and while they both use tiny needles, they are completely different. Instead of following traditional Chinese medicine, this technique is based on modern Western medical principles. The goal of this technique is to release muscle tension and reduce pain by targeting trigger points.

It is commonly used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Shoulder pain
  • Neck pain
  • Low back pain
  • Tendinopathy
  • Tendonitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Repetitive motion disorders
  • Tension-type headaches
  • Spinal problems
  • Pelvic pain
  • And more!

3. Trigger Point Release

Once the needle is in place, your physical therapist may move it slightly to stimulate the muscle. This may cause a twitch or slight muscle spasm, which is a good sign that the muscle is releasing tension.

4. Post-Treatment

After the session, the needles will be removed, and you may feel some mild soreness or tightness in the treated area. This is normal and expected and typically goes away within 24 to 48 hours.
